Hair tinsel involves weaving thin, metallic strands into your locks, creating a luminous and eye-catching effect. Below we’ll dive into the shimmering world of hair tinsel and share some looks we love – perfect for Christmas celebrations, or any kind of special event throughout the year.     View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Hair & Makeup | Brisbane (@twidalehairandmakeup)   So, What Exactly Is Hair Tinsel?   Hair tinsel is a popular and temporary hair accessory known for its shimmering qualities. Made from materials like polyester or holographic mylar, these thin metallic strands, known as hair tinsel, come in various colours, and are typically woven or tied into strands of hair, providing a customisable and playful way to add sparkle.   Why We Love It   A big advantage is that hair tinsel is temporary – it can be easily removed without causing damage to the hair, giving wearers the freedom to experiment with different colours and styles without long-term commitment. The lightweight nature and heatproof properties of hair tinsel also ensures it doesn’t weigh down the hair and can be curled or styled into place, making it perfect for various hairstyles. Hair tinsel is known for its reflective properties, catching and reflecting light to create a dazzling, luminous effect. It’s also super versatile depending on the look you desire – tinsel can be strategically placed for a very subtle glimmer or used more abundantly for a bold and festive appearance And while you might think this is a look strictly for small kids, think again: celebs like Katy Perry, Hilary Duff & Megan Thee Stallion have all been snapped rocking the trend.   How Do I Attach Hair Tinsel?   There are two primary techniques for attaching hair tinsel: the single-strand method and the microlink method, often referred to as microbeads (the methods may differ based on the hair tinsel you use, but they should always come with instructions – failing that, there are plenty of tutorial videos doing the rounds on the internet). Microlink Method: For microlinks, a small section of hair is taken, and it is threaded through the microlink bead, positioned about an inch away from the scalp. Subsequently, several strands of tinsel are threaded through the bead to the top, ensuring a small amount of tinsel (around .5 centimetre) sticks out at the upper end. Once both the hair and tinsel are inside, the bead is clamped down with pliers to flatten it against the head. Single-Strand Method: The alternative single-strand method involves creating a slip knot with the tinsel and tying it to a few strands of hair close to the scalp. It’s important to highlight that each of these methods produces distinct results. Tinsel attached with a slip knot tends to be finer, seamlessly blending in with the natural hair for a subtle and natural-looking sparkle when illuminated by light. On the contrary, microlinks create a chunkier effect, making them perfect for individuals aiming to make a more dramatic and bold statement with their hair.   Hairstyles To Try Yourself   1. Rainbow Hair Tinsel Strands Start with a simple yet stunning look by weaving classic hair tinsel strands into your locks. Choose metallic tones that complement your outfit and the festive season. Opt for medium weight strands in mixed colours that catch the sunlight, adding a touch of glamour to your locks. To achieve this look at home, section your hair about 1 cm either side of the crown, and clip on top of your head. Then add bits of tinsel using either methods above. Unclip the sectioned hair at the crown and allow it to fall over the top in a fine layer that allows the colourful strands to shine through. 2. Hair Tinsel Highlights For a subtler touch of sparkle, consider hair tinsel highlights. Choose a few fine strands in colours that enhance your natural hair colour such as gold or red. This look is perfect for those who want a hint of shimmer without going all-in. To create this look at home, create wider parts either side of your head, and tie in very fine strands using the slipknot method. The reflective quality of the tinsel will catch the sunlight, creating a dazzling effect. 3. Hair Tinsel Braids Elevate your braids with the magic of hair tinsel. Whether you opt for a fishtail, Dutch, or classic three-strand braid, intertwining hair tinsel strands into your braids will add a whimsical and festive touch. To achieve this look, attach the tinsel using either method, then braid your hair, securing the ends with clear elastics. This style not only keeps you cool in the heat but also ensures you stand out in any crowd. 4. Hair Tinsel Ponytail Upgrade your ponytail game with hair tinsel for a fun and playful look. Secure the hair tinsel as before (using either method), brushing hair back into a slick high pony, adding pomade to keep in place. Next, take a curling iron or straightener and add waves to the ponytail, allowing the hair tinsel to peek through. Add hairspray to set in place.   Want Twidale To Create a Tinsel Hair Look For Your Next Event? Ready to shine this holiday season? Twidale Hair & Makeup is your go-to glam squad in Brisbane.
